To study the causes of the Great War and to examine the role of Austria- Hungary in 1914. Grantee is undertaking a book length study tentatively titled "Stumbling Toward Disaster: Austria-Hungary and the Coming of War, 1912-1914. Despite recent access to archival holdings which have led to new insights about the role of the British, French, and German governments concerning the First World War, the case of the Dual Monarchy has not been similarly treated as yet. New archival sources, new analytic tools, and the work of other scholars now permit the development of a more satisfactory explanation of why the Dual Monarchy chosen to embark upon war in 1914.
