Completion of a critical edition of Erasmus, Apologia brevis ad viginti quator libros Alberti Pii quondam Carporum comitis for the Hague edition of the Opera omnia now in progress under the sponsorship of the Netherlands Academy and the Union Academique Internationale. This work, published in Paris in 1531, is among the most important of Erasmus' polemics against his critics. They had written a comprehensive indictment of Erasmus, charging that he had prepared the way for Luther and that his works contained many heretical or suspect conclusions. It is hoped that this edition will give the basis for a clearer view of Erasmus' views on both doctrine and institutions in the last years of his life.
