To complete a comparative social history of secondary and higher education in Germany, France, and England entitled, Education, Elites and Society in Modern Europe, from about 1800 to 1960. Grantee will describe and compare the institutional framework of the three main European systems, the changing patterns of enrollments in the various types of secondary and university-level institutions, the social origins of students and the subsequent careers of graduates. Additional sections of the book will deal with the educational backgrounds of higher civil servants and politicians, entrepreneurs and technicians, academics and intellectuals.
