To examine in a critical study entitled The Re-Created Self, the ways Americans have realized themselves through memory and imagination in the autobiography. The Re-Created Self will study thirty or more exemplary works in the genre from the 17th through the 20th centuries, and will relate these works to a larger number of less imaginative autobiographies.
