To study the manifestations and use of "the I" in modern Spanish American poetry. Grantee will examine the use of "the I" from the stand-point of after affirming its identity, it retreats into a private realm, isolating itself from the sympathy of the reader. The works of three authors will be examined, Ruben Dario, Vicente Huidobro, and Cesar Vallejo. The works of these writers would seem to state, at times even celebrate, the autonomy of "the I", relying either on estrangement or on self-sufficiency.
