To analyze the rhyming of Chinese poets during the period 600- A.D., following the changes in rhyming from generation to generation, and using these observed changes as a guide to the phonological evolution of the Chinese language. The work on the period 200 - 550 A.D. has been completed and the results published by the grantee. Under this portion of the study, the phonological evolution of Chinese rhymes and finals during the T'ang Dynasty will be established.
