To complete a history of the "Victorian Connection", an Anglo- American group of 19th century intellectuals such, as Leslie Stephen and Charles Eliot Norton, who were responsible for the creation of major cultural agencies: the "higher" journalism (e.g. the Nation and Fortnightly Review), the art museum, the public library and the secular, humanistic university. PI is concerned to develop an accurate account of cultural hegemony and cultural conflict in the 19th century and to recast intellectual history into the history of social networks in a manner that allows for a sharper understanding of the relationship between writers and their audience.
