To study a recurring concern of modern dramatists, that of the relationship between the world onstage and the world offstage, in an effort to establish a coherent framework that will accommodate the diverse elements of modern drama. The conceptions about this theory represent the progressive working out of a fundamental creative concern in modern drama, that the thing known onstage and the way of knowing it are not categorically separable.
