To develop articles and a book on slavery and the post-slavery period and to examine the interaction between folk cultures of black societies urban mass sub-cultures and the interaction of both with black and white artistic and literary elites, and those who commercialize "soul" and negritude and those who politicize them. A variety of sources including folklore, sermons and movie content will be utilized to contrast 1) the USA and Brazil; 2) Haiti and Trinidad; 3) Jamaica and Cuba; 4) Martinique and Louisiana; and 5) maroon communities vs urban black settlements Emphasis is upon isolating and explaining the key verbal, visual, and kinesic symbols that enrich life and give meaning within the reality that can be called "The Black World".
