Politics and Culture in Industrialized Societies

To examine recent Marxist and pluralist theories of the nexus between politics and culture in advanced societies. There is disagreement as to whether agencies of belief formation (which are indirectly orchestrated by the state) prevent challenges to pluralistic polities or whether they threaten them. Study will also investigate U.S. public policy in the areas of mass media, the arts, advertising, and education in order to see whether charges against the state are valid.
