A study of enduring cultural components of the socio-political divisions which crystallized in late Imperial Russian society and continued to mark Russian development in the post-revolutionary period. These cleavages found immediate expression in a variety of rival literatures, literary forms and concretely formulated cultural ideals which express the growing social divisions, tensions, and hatreds which subsequently surfaced and which proved to be perhaps the most lasting and unfortunate legacy of the old regime.
