A three part study of Milton's poetry which, through a series of new "approaches", will permit a fresh treatment of each poem, while maintaining a sense of the integrity which exists in each of the three volumes — minor poems (1645), Paradise Lost, and the 1671 volume containing Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes — under study. Themes will be the growth toward maturity, the role of the singer in exile, and alternative ways of dealing with the pagan past, renunciation or imitation and re-creation.
