To produce a synthesis of the history of the Southern literary expression. The study will represent the culmination of a series of inquiries into the Southern expression as opposed to the New England expression. PI views the continuity of Southern letters as a result of Southern history and sees the Southern literary mind as existing in its historicity and with the view of the South as a symbol of alienation.
