Gustave Courbet and His Century: Themes, Styles, and Social Issues

To complete a major study of the French 19th century realist painter. Gustave Courbet, which is tentatively entitled: Gustave Courbet and His Century: Themes. Styles and Social Issues. Study will consider the following critical areas: l) Courbet's total oeuvre; 2) the relation of Courbet's work and intentions to Fourierism 3) Courbet and his critics; 4) Courbet's treatment of the nude, both as erotic subject and insofar as his Bathers constitute a critical iconographical turning point between the mythological subjects of tradition and the "subjectless" motifs of later art; 5) Courbet and the Commune.
