To study the pattern of ready antique precedent for funerary art as it was recognized and interpreted in the periods of classical revival, including a review of the antique literary and rhetorical topoi of mourning and the tradition of funerary customs. Study will consider how Christian practice and experience in these final matters was variously seen to benefit from classical or presumably classical standards and exempla—or to be threatened by them.
