Marriage and Family in Early Modern Russia

To analyze (1) the traditional pre-Christian marriage forms and kinship structure in early modern Russia; (2) the social status of husband, wife and children and the role of kinship in fixing that status; (3) marriage and divorce in Muscovy; and (4) sexual relations in Muscovy. Three basic kinds of sources utilized will be (1) clerical penitentials and essays, (2) private-law documents and (3) various literary sources.
