FAIN: FA-12064-78

Morton J. Horwitz
President and Fellows of Harvard College (Cambridge, MA 02138-3800)

To write a history of American law from 1870-1970, emphasizing changes in law and the legal profession and relating them to changes in the economy, politics, philosophy and society. Study will focus on: 1. The relationship between legal institutions and doctrines on one hand and the decline of a self-regulating market economy and the rise of the regulatory state; 2. The relationship between legal thought and the problems of maintaining the basic postulates behind "the rule of law" in a regulatory-welfare state.
