This will be a study of the formulation and evolution of United States policy toward the Communist world from the proclamation of the Truman Doctrine in 1947 through the end of the Truman administration and the death of Stalin in 1953. It will be a sequel to Pi’s earlier book, The United States and the Origins of the Cold War. 1941-1947 (New York: Columbia University Press, 1972). This book will analyze the external and internal determinants of U.S. policy in terms of their full diversity and relative significance.
