Paris Portraits will endeavor to show that the myth which has congealed the experiences of American expatriates in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s into a set of propositions emphasizing dissipation, disillusionment and occasional bursts of literary and artistic ferment has not only turned the participants themselves into caricatures but has distorted the complex, creative and fascinating period they helped to shape. Rather than forge a new myth, Paris Portraits will explore the multiformity of expatriation by examining it from the perspectives of six representative American creators whose activities in Paris offer fresh, reliable and corrective insights into this intricate subject.
