To analyze a small mountain community in East Tennessee, from its initial settlement in 1818 to its final dismemberment in 1938 when the area became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some of the basic questions include the relationship between the lives of the people and their constant interaction with a wilderness environment, since this cove was geographically isolated by high mountains from other communities, and forced to become independent and innovative.
