To write a study of Herman Melville's last five novels, Moby Dick, Pierre, Israel Potter, The Confidence Man. and Billy Budd. The book will be the culmination of a long-term project involving all of Melville's fiction, and from which 2 books have already been published. The focus of the last volume will be Melville's preoccupation with madness.
