To write a history of Spain's Carlist War (1833-39), one of the most important mass conservative movements in 19th-century Europe. This book will provide the first satisfactory political and military history of the war, but more importantly will study the motives and causes for peasant support of Carlism in northern Spain. It will also contribute to our understanding of peripheral nationalism in Spain and more generally in Europe.
