This research is directed towards the completion of a book-length manuscript entitled Buddhism. Politics and Culture In Fourteenth Century Japan. Research will concentrate on translation of sections from the diary of the 14th century Japanese Zen master, Gido Shushin (1325-1388). Attention will also be devoted to the monk Muso Soseki (1275-1351) and his instructions on the nature and practice of Zen. This study of these two monks and their writings will shed more light on medieval Japanese politics as well as on the character of medieval Zen and Zen-related culture.
