The Continuity of Victorian and Modern Poetics

FAIN: FA-12162-78

Carol Tecla Christ
Smith College (Northampton, MA 01060-2916)

To write a book about the continuities of Victorian and modern poetics, which will show both the modernism of Victorian literature and the anti-Victorianism of modern literature. Book will include chapters on the following topics: the Victorian use of landscape and its relationship to the modernist doctrine of the symbol; the disintegration of the long poem into disjunctive lyrical units; the development by both modern and Victorian poets of a doctrine of impersonality which attempts to objectify and extend subjective experience by the use of mask; and the uses of myth and history.
