To elaborate upon the revolutionary aspects of a symphony (whose program includes an execution) premiered just as the crowd in the street was demanding death sentences for the ministers of Charles X, then on trial. Study will focus on theme of seeing music of an era philologically, as a document of its civilization, while at the same time not losing sight of the sophistication and craftsmanship of the individual composer. Music of Hector Berlioz (1830) will be among the compositions explored.
