Project will construct a systematic methodology for studying direct stylistic influences on the music of a given composer. The need for such a study arises from a recent emphasis in musicological research upon problems that can be solved essentially with recourse to concrete documentary evidence. Study will result in a book that will contribute to our knowledge of Haydn's evolving concept of symphonic structure and identify a homogeneous repertory of concert symphonies that were performed at Eszterhaza, (1770s and 1780s).
