To write an intellectual and political biography of the Hungarian Marxist, philosopher and social theorist, Georg Lukacs. Four periods of Lukacs' intellectual and political life will be analyzed: "Before Marx: 1910-1918", "Early Marxism: 1919-1928", "Under the Shadow of Stalin: 1928-1945", and "Conflict and Renewal: 1945-1971". All of Lukacs' writings, Hungarian and German, published and unpublished, will be utilized.
