To prepare and write a book interpreting American literary naturalism from the 1890s to the early 1950s. PI asserts that American naturalism has never been characterized by a single dominant philosophical position or literary form but has rather gained its strength from "freedom within continuity". PI will study three periods of naturalism and their representative authors.
