To do a book-length examination of Albuquerque, N.M. between 1940 and 1974 in order to illuminate the broader issue of the causes and effects of Sunbelt urbanization. Some of the aspects of this study will include: (1) where the new residents came from and the effect their cultural and socio-economic backgrounds had on the character of the city; (2) the extent to which people were drawn to the city; (3) the ways in which local and state public policy stimulated or controlled growth; (4) the impact of rapid growth on municipal services; (5) the reaction of native Albuquerqueans; (6)when and why some people begin to question the proposition that bigger was necessarily better; (7) the ways in which residents sought to maintain a sense of community during change.
