A Three-Generational Family History of the Wade Hamptons of South Carolina

FAIN: FA-12250-78

James Larry Roark
University of Missouri, St. Louis (St. Louis, MO 63121)

To do a study of three generations of a particular aristocratic family, the Wade Hamptons, I, II, and III, grandfather, father, and son. The Wade Hamptons were rooted in place—South Carolina—and felt the impact of considerable time—from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. They were inheritors of a particular past and reflected the dilemmas, privileges, and burdens of the South's agricultural aristocracy. Study will provide a fresh understanding of the evolution of the Southern planter elite and its struggle to retain its position in a rapidly changing society.
