To do a study on the subject of literary censorship in the Meiji period to the prewar and wartime period (1912-1945). Primary focus will be to set forth the tensions revealed in the works of writers of realistic fiction whose fundamental drive to analyze and demonstrate the forces at work in their society has been muted or misshapen or altogether repressed. Study will result in a book length reconsideration of modern Japanese fiction.
