Study will elucidate the relationships between law, society, and social changes in British India of the 19th century through examination of ethnographical materials and reports of appeal court cases. The Indian situation is both complicated, and rendered extremely interesting, by the fact that in India a foreign ruling race assumed the responsibility for administering systems of personal law embodying values not only (at least initially) imperfectly understood but very different from those of the foreigners’ own culture.
