To write a two-volume study of the role of the classics and of classical civilization in Victorian Britain as manifested in the works on both Greek and Roman history, politics, philosophy, religion, mythology, and certain major figures of antiquity. The first volume will deal with Greece—Victorian aesthetic Hellenism, Greek mythology, Homeric poetry, the Athenian constitution, Socrates, Plato, and the ethics of Aristotle. The second volume will deal with the Romans—Roman Britain, the Roman Republic, Cicero, Julius Caesar, Imperialism, Lucretius, Stoicism, early Christianity, and the general development of Classical studies .in 19th century Britain.
