To examine two major Italian Renaissance poetic movements: the "dolce stil novo" (1300s) and "Petrarchism" (1500s) as they reflected and were affected by two crises in Italian history: the rise of despots in the cities (1300) and the "Age of Italian Wars" (1500s).
