Claudia Jensen
University of Washington (Seattle, WA 98195-1016)

My project, "Music for the Tsar: Music at the Muscovite Court in the Seventeenth Century" brings to light the important and pivotal musical life of Russia during this crucial transitional period. By using a variety of primary sources, both Russian and from the West, I trace the rich cultural context of Muscovite music in the seventeenth century, a period fundamental to the formation and development of Russian musical language and musical thinking and one that has been largely bypassed in published scholarly research. My work integrates sacred and secular traditions, the music of the theater and of diplomatic and ceremonial practice, and the private music of the court. The grant period will be devoted to writing the remaining sections of this monograph.
