A Cultural History of the Concept of Velocity

FAIN: FA-51427-05

Jeffrey Schnapp
Stanford University (Stanford, CA 94305-2004)

I propose to write the first cultural history of velocity in Western culture: from the ancient Greek & Roman identification of speed with god-like agents to the coaching revolution of the 18th-19th centuries to the rise of mechanized conveyances and modern transportation networks in the 19th-20th centuries to the contemporary information revolution.
