My project is a book for Cambridge University Press about the vast song repertory on poems by the German poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856). Over 8,000 compositions testify to this one man's importance, not only in music and literature but in social history throughout the long nineteenth century. In this book, I plan to examine the changing uses of Heine in music from the 1820s to World War II, beginning with Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and ending with the Third Reich.
