To carry out research for a book entitled "Enlightenment and Enthusiasm: Global Christianity 1650-1830." The book is part of a new seven-volume History of Christianity designed to replace the old Pelican History of the Church. The challenge of the study is to bring into sharper focus the expansion of Christianity into new parts of the world without neglecting the importance of Europe where most Christians lived in the eighteenth century. The study will address issues in both intellectual and social history, and will give special attention to the new religious and cultural encounters between Europeans and other civilizations.
