Manuscript Anthologizing of Poetry in Early Modern England

FAIN: FA-51782-05

Arthur Francis Marotti
Wayne State University (Detroit, MI 48201-1347)

This (comparative) study will examine the practice of private anthologizing of poetry in manuscript in early modern England. It focuses on the activities of individual verse collectors, whose tastes, interests, and sociopolitical positions are reflected in the artifacts they produced or had produced for them. It will situate particular manuscript collections in the environments in which they were compiled—the royal court, the Inns-of-Court (law schools), the university, the households of the aristocracy and gentry. It will also consider women’s significant participation in this system of literary transmission and examine the anthologizing practices of the English Catholic subculture.
