The project will study the eastern Mediterranean world from the Aegean to western Iran and from Anatolia to the Sudan in the period from 1500 to 1200 BC as an integrated socio-political system. The individual states shared common characteristics in all aspects of their societies, and their histories can be better understood as a result of their participation in an international system. The project will investigate the collective attributes of the participant societies with a focus on social structure, economy, and the sharing of ideologies and cultural elements. It will write a transnational history of the region, seeking to explain why the system originated and ultimately failed.
