My book complicates present-day assumptions about the estrangement of religion from modernity by demonstrating that, historically, women missionary authors consistently (and to us, surprisingly) grounded their authority to work and to write on their alliance with modernity. Mine is the first book to approach women missionary writers as literary figures and the first to examine together women missionary authors from multiple denominations and regions.
