National Bodies: Cartes de Visite Portraits and the Politics of Photography in 19th-century America is an interdisciplinary study of the cartes de visite portrait photographs (the first form of portrait photography printed from glass negatives as multiple paper prints), in the context of debates over nationalism and nation formation accompanying the Civil War and Reconstruction.
