PICTURING THE HEALING ARTS showcases manuscript and print copies of the medieval treatise known as the "Tractatus de herbis" with three goals in mind: to expand our understanding of the role of scientific illustration, to trace the medieval and early-modern transmission of therapeutic knowledge, and especially, to outline a new approach to the study of reading practices. This book-length study is addressed to a broad community of scholars including historians of art and science as well as others engaged in the study of visual and verbal literacy.
