Tiberius on Capri: Culture and Empire

The emperor Tiberius’ passion for Greek studies and scholarly seclusion, seemingly paradoxical in the first man at Rome, draws our attention to certain of his pastimes which were in fact matters of vital interest to the social and intellectual elite of his day: astrology, gastronomy, the liberal arts, and mythology. The central concerns of this study are the influence of culture in the evolving definition of the Roman Emperor and, conversely, the impact of the First Citizen on the culture of his empire.
