I propose to complete the writing of a book on Arnold Schoenberg's life and work in America (1933-1951) consisting of an introduction, five chapters and an epilogue. I will address his acculturation in America and illuminate the genesis and contexts of his American works and explain the politics of publication and performance. I will also discuss his teaching methods, his interaction with students and the reception of his compositions in America. My study will challenge clichés and fill significant gaps in the existing literature and thus contribute to a new understanding of this key figure in twentieth-century music.
