Study to document the precise nature, intensity and extent of the ways in which the American Revolution affected political argument and action in the Netherlands (1780-95). Uses of ideology by Dutch "Patriots" seeking to bring about political and constitutional changes and by their "Orangist" opponents defending the status quo. Special attention to the kinds of justifications offered by those who participated in the dutch Revolutions of 1787 and 1795. Augments fellow's dissertation on political justification in the Netherlands from 1747 to 1800. Fellow to do research in Amsterdam.
