An Edition and Investigation of all of Extant Works of Walter of Odington

FAIN: FB-10516-70

Phillip D. Thomas
Wichita State University (Wichita, KS 67260-9700)

Fellow to edit all the known treatises of Walter of Odington, a Benedictine monk in medieval England, and to examine them in the general cultural and intellectual tradition of the 13th and 14th centuries. Odington is an excellent example of a medieval scholar who made important theoretical contributions in several areas but about whom little is known. In his writings he dealt with the theoretical bases of music, alchemy, astronomy, optics, arithmetic and geometry. An edition of these works will provide a greater insight into the thought patterns of medieval England and the divergent ways in which medieval man saw his environment.
