Heine and the Spanish Modernistas

Study of influence and relationship between writings of the German poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1836) and those of 12 representatives of the Spanish-American literary movement on the late 19th century called modernismo. Historical study of Latin America's early acquaintance with Heine and a comparative analysis of French, Spanish and Spanish-American criticisms of Heine. Important similarities in poetry of modernistas, such as common themes, motive, and stylistic devices, role of irony, commonly shared awareness of the problematic quality of human life in the contemporary world. Two volume work; first volume re-working of original research done for fellow's dissertation.
