Biography of Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS in Nazi Germany, the most powerful man in the Third Reich apart from Hitler himself. Despite Himmler's importance in World War II, no extended scholarly appraisal of his life and political career has yet appeared, primarily because the records of the SS, seized at the end of the war, have only recently been declassified and microfilmed.
