Book-length critical study of the architecture of John Wellborn Root (1850-1891). Fellow hopes to establish Root as one of the most important architects in the history of progressive American architecture, along with Frank Lloyd Wright, H.H. Richardson, and Louis H. Sullivan. Seeks to establish Root as one of three or four most important architects in the history of progressive American architecture, ranking with Frank Lloyd Wright, H.H. Richardson, and Louis H. Sullivan. The body of Root's work was so extensive as to discourage scholars and most of his buildings have been demolished. Fellow previously edited Root's writings on architecture, The Meaning of Architecture: Building and Writings by John Wellborn Root (1967). Fellow has no graduate degrees; art critic for the Kansas City Star and board member of the Society of Architectural Historians.
